The Glamorous Life of a Free-lance Comic Artist

I hate my job so much right now.

The story that we’re telling has ONE female character. ONE.

I have searched high and low through the script for another, and they’re not even in the BACKGROUND. I have express directions to NOT put women in the background.

Okayyy, I said, dubious already. 

But the one female character is actually a kick ass fighter and really kind of cool as a person. I’m pretty happy with that. That’s cool. 

Except.

In this story, everyone is supposed to dress the same. Its got this dystopian setting, where difference is not allowed, and everyone is supposed to conform conform conform. The clothes are supposed to be very bland and worn, and I was told to think ‘concentration camp’ when doing character design.

So I designed my ONE female character in the same outfit as the other characters wear. I gave her short hair, because everyone in an age group lives in a single home, in close quarters, giving a great chance for, you know, lice and shit to spread. Short hair and same clothes as everyone else seemed right, yeah?

Well no. No, evidently not. My client has decided my female character needs to be sexier. Really long hair, and a tunic with no leggings underneath to show off her legs. I’m talking Logan’s Run inspired mini-skirt ‘tunic’. And sandals. I draw the line at putting her in heels.

Oh, yeah, and the protagonist and female have to have ‘blonde hair and light eyes, and should be relatively tall’, while the antagonist is short with dark hair and eyes.
